“Transforming Ideas into Intellectual Assets”
On November 26, 2024, the Cavite State University - Carmona Campus, through its Research Services Office, successfully held a one-day seminar titled “Protect, Publish, Prosper: Transforming Ideas into Intellectual Assets.” The event ran from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM and was conducted within the campus premises. This initiative aimed to empower faculty researchers with vital knowledge and practical insights regarding the responsible use of emerging technologies in research, as well as the processes surrounding knowledge management, intellectual property protection, and academic publication.
The program officially commenced at 9:00 AM with an invocation and the singing of the National Anthem, Carmona Hymn, and Cavite Hymn, setting a solemn and formal tone for the day’s activities. Following this, Dr. Carlo Emil B. Mañabo, the Campus Research and Knowledge Management Coordinator, delivered the welcome remarks. He emphasized the importance of research integrity, innovation, and knowledge sharing in uplifting the academic reputation of the university. A message was then delivered by Dr. Regene G. Hernandez, Chair of the Department of Industrial and Information Technology, who inspired the attendees to embrace responsible research practices and actively contribute to the institution’s body of scholarly work.
At 9:26 AM, Prof. Jocelyn B. Siochi, Chair of the Department of Teacher Education, introduced the morning’s resource speaker, Dr. Khenilyn P. Lewis, Chair of the Information Technology Department at CvSU-Trece Martires Campus. Dr. Lewis delivered a comprehensive talk titled “The Responsible Use of AI in Research Writing.” Her presentation highlighted the growing presence of AI tools such as ChatGPT and other language models in academic work. She discussed their advantages, including enhancing productivity, idea generation, and language refinement, while also cautioning researchers on the ethical boundaries and proper attribution when using such tools. She emphasized that while AI can aid research writing, it should not replace human critical thinking and academic rigor. An open forum followed, where participants actively engaged with the speaker, posing questions and sharing their perspectives on the implications of AI in academic contexts.
After the morning session, certificates were awarded to the resource speaker and contributors. The participants then proceeded to a scheduled lunch break from 11:46 AM to 1:00 PM.
The afternoon session began with the introduction of the second part of the program by Dr. Maria Andrea C. Francia, Research Coordinator of the Department of Management. She opened the KMC Caravan, a collaborative initiative designed to orient faculty members on the processes, divisions, and services of the Knowledge Management Center. The KMC Caravan ran from 1:11 PM to 4:00 PM and featured three insightful presentations. Dr. Agnes C. Francisco discussed “KMC Policies, Processes and Guidelines”, providing an overview of how the KMC supports the documentation and tracking of research outputs, policy creation, and knowledge sharing. Following this, Dr. Teddy F. Tepora, Head of the Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management (IPTBM) and Manager of ITSO, explained the “Intellectual Property and Technology Business Management Division Processes.” He focused on the importance of protecting intellectual property rights, procedures for patenting, and mechanisms for technology transfer. The final talk was delivered by Dr. Alvin William A. Alvarez, Head of the Publication and Communication Division (PCD), who elaborated on “Publication and Communication Division Policies and Guidelines.” His session addressed the correct procedures for submitting research for publication, understanding institutional publication support, and the importance of adherence to ethical publication standards.
The session was followed by another open forum, where attendees had the opportunity to clarify the policies and ask questions directly to the speakers. These interactive exchanges deepened the understanding of the processes discussed and encouraged greater faculty participation in institutional research efforts. Certificates were once again awarded to all speakers, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the success of the event.
The program concluded with heartfelt closing remarks from Ms. Janine B. Bacosmo, who, along with Mr. Antonino Jose L. Bayson, effectively moderated the entire event. She reaffirmed the university’s dedication to fostering a strong research culture and expressed gratitude to all participants. Overall, the seminar “Protect, Publish, Prosper: Transforming Ideas into Intellectual Assets” was a significant and impactful initiative that successfully enhanced faculty knowledge on ethical AI use, intellectual property rights, and institutional research policies, while promoting collaboration and academic excellence within the campus.
