Fenimore Art Museum
by Kadence Lyman & Athena Renshaw
Each year the Fenimore Art Museum hosts a "Young at Art!" Regional Youth Art Program. The submission deadline was January 10th, with an award ceremony planned for Saturday, April 12th. This year's theme was Legends. It is a program that only selects a few students from each school in grades 6 - 12 between Chenango and Madison counties. This year six of CVA's very own students were chosen to show their art in this program and here is what they had to say about their pieces:

“Goddess of Beauty”
Artist Statement
The legend of Aphrodites the image of love, beauty, fertility, eternal youth, and grace. Known for being the Goddess of Love. A shown representation of the reflection of beauty to people in olympus but beauty is also throughout nature not only in a Greek Goddess. In this painting I wanted to show the beauty in Aphrodites but to feel the beauty of nature through color and texture of the piece to create a peaceful and still feeling.

“Siren’s Song”
Artist Statement
I had many ideas when it came to the theme of ‘legends’ but one really stuck out to me, Mermaids and Sirens. I just love the idea of a beautiful creature being so destructive. With her long purple hair and pink scales, she charms the pirates on the water, dragging them down deeper and deeper into the sea below. Using colored pencils, I tried my best to capture both her beauty and her unnatural features. She continues to sit on the rock, waiting for her next victim.

“Unicorn Legend”
Artist Statement
Unicorns are magical creatures that people thought existed. I wanted to capture this mythical being walking in the water in a hidden forest. The luminescent water surrounding the unicorn shows its beauty and grace.

“Wipeout of the Legends”
Artist Statement
For this art piece, I made 5 feathered velociraptors in 5 different mediums. For the dinosaur, I used oil pastel, crayons, colored pencils, markers, and charcoal. The background was made with watercolor and crayons. This portrait shows the mass extinction of the dinosaurs when a big meteor hit Earth, wiping out all dinosaurs.

“The Legend of the Barn”
Artist Statement
For this piece I focused on capturing the original American dream. Even though my Grandpa had many challenges he always wanted to have a farm and carry out the family legacy. His dream came in a way he could never imagine. His dad, my great grandfather, had been running the family farm for years with the help of my grandpa when he was still young. It was all going great but then his dad died but there was a problem with the family farm, so many questions such as what's going to happen to the farm. My grandpa was only 17 and everyone thought he couldn't run a successful farm or keep one operating. But he took on that challenge and against all odds he took over the farm and continued to run the farm for a while in Dutchess County, NewYork. He had 3 children and continued to thrive but yet again another roadblock, the barn burnt down and there was no fixing it. He yet again persevered to live the American dream once more. A family friend told him about a barn on Putts Hill in Mohawk, New York two and a half hours away, he took the chance and moved to the barn in 1991 . He used this new barn to grow his farm and give his children and now great grandchildren a good childhood and teach them many lessons in life to help them succeed. This piece just like my life is not perfect and has its flaws but it also would not be the same without the barn.
