Introduction

Message from Dr. Olzacki - Superintendent of Schools

We understand the need for families to have as much information as possible regarding the transition back to school in September. At this time, we are sharing with you a summary of the Region 14 plans (A, B, & C) and the revised school calendar that will be voted on during the August 3rd Board of Education meeting. These are fluid documents meaning that we are continually receiving the latest information provided to us by the Connecticut State Department of Education, the State of Connecticut Department of Health as well as the Pomperaug and Torrington Health Districts. We will be using these documents as a guide and changes will be made, if needed, as directives from the State and local health authorities continue to be put in place. We hope you find this information helpful. We would also like to thank Dr. Andrea Needleman, Robert Rubbo of Torrington Health District, and Neal Lustig of Pomperaug Health District for their guidance.

Sincerely,

Dr. O

The Plan Development Process

Throughout May and June, a district committee that included a teacher from each building, a school nurse, a representative from the Nonnewaug Teacher's Association, two school counselors, our physical trainer, our Athletic Director, our Director of Special Services, our Director of Curriculum and Instruction, our Director of Agriscience, and three additional building administrators engaged in inquiry-based research and provided foundational ideas for further discussions in July.

The Connecticut State Department of Education released a reopening of schools guidance document at the beginning of July titled "Adapt, Advance Achieve: Connecticut's Plan to Learn and Grow Together." Upon the release of the document, a second committee was formed to include the district and school administrators, Board of Education members, medical professionals, representatives from our local health districts, our Director of Food Services, a representative from First Student bus company, and parents.

To develop our plan, we utilized our guiding principles as a district, the information from the State's document, and the outcomes of discussions among the committees mentioned above. The plan presented here is the result of these two committee's work.

Guiding Principles

1) The health, safety, social, and emotional well-being of our students and staff is of highest importance.

2) Teaching and learning that occurs in the school buildings ensures the best educational opportunities for our students.

3) Reflection upon and improvement of past practices in regards to distance learning and our use of technology are essential to a successful teaching and learning experience.
