Lockdown Procedures

Once you hear “This is a lockdown” repeated on the P.A. system three times:

    • Check all halls. Put any student in the hallway in your room, office or media center.

    • If students are in the cafeteria, students need to move very quietly toward the gym if time allows. If time does not allow, students should quietly move to the gymnasium side of the cafeteria, away from the windows and exterior doors.

    • If students are in the gymnasium or auditorium, have them stay seated and lock doors.

    • End classrooms will need to check the athletic fields and make sure nothing is propping exterior doors open.

    • Classes outside are to go to the far end of the fields away from the building.

    • If your room is near a restroom, check those areas for stray students.

    • Lock your doors, close your blinds and turn off your lights. Do not open your door for any reason.

    • Move all students away from the doors and windows to a safe corner of your room and stay quiet.

    • Place a flap over the window of your classroom door if possible.

    • Stay in your room and sit quietly until an administrator, security associate, or school resource officer unlocks your door and gives the "all clear".

Fire Drill Procedures

State law requires that each school participate in a fire drill during the first five days of school and each month thereafter. Teachers should post exit maps by their door and explain the directions for exiting their classrooms during the first two days of school.

    • Staff and students will wait for the Fire Drill announcement to be made.

    • All students and staff will evacuate the building in an orderly and quiet manner.

    • The school should be completely evacuated within two minutes or less.

    • Occupants should be evacuated at least 500 feet from the building.

    • Teachers will see that all windows and doors in their classrooms are closed and will turn off the lights when leaving.

    • All teachers will account for all of their students using their red emergency folders.

    • Do not block any entrance to the school.

    • Students should quietly return to class when the all clear signal is given.

Emergency Evacuation Plan

Due to a serious emergency, bomb threat or other disaster, it may be necessary to evacuate Rocky River. If an administrator gives the directive to evacuate the building:

    • Evacuate in the same fashion as you would a fire drill. On the way out, take note of anything that is unusual (package, container, etc.). Report anything unusual to an administrator immediately.

    • Teachers should escort students to the school site evacuation zone:

    • Wait on your administrator for further directions.

    • Students will remain with teachers at all times.

    • Teachers should check class rosters and report any missing or additional students.

    • Teachers should bring emergency information they have collected on each student.

    • Administrators will have school’s crisis box.

    • Teachers should bring cell phone.

Level II and III Evacuation Plan: In the event of a Level II or Level III evacuation, we will evacuate the building to the Clear Creek Commerce Business Park Entrance or CMC Urgent Care of Mint Hill.

Tornado Emergency Plan

    • All teachers will escort their students into the hallway and assume the “Tuck and Duck” position (kneeling, facing the wall, heads covered).

    • Classrooms closest to the doorways will move away from the doors and closer to the center of the hall. If need be you may put students two deep. In the case of a genuine emergency, hallway restrooms and internal science labs may be used.

    • Office staff will go to the guidance conference room and take shelter.

    • Students in the Media Center will go to the Media Center supply closet.

    • All students and staff in the gym will exit and proceed to the coaches offices behind the gym.

    • Any students in the cafeteria will immediately report to the back gym hallway quickly and quietly

    • Students and teachers are to stay in the “tuck and duck” position until the “All Clear” is given.

    • If you are outside, in a car or on a school bus, you should get out of the vehicle and get into a shallow ravine and lay flat protecting your head. Stay away from trees, vehicles and other large objects.
