How is Connie's story a dark, modern fairytale? What about her can we see as subtle references to the princesses, maidens, girls in towers of childhood tales?
Is Arnold Friend an "anti-prince", the Big Bad Wolf? Revisit his descriptions and look for clues that link him to the fairytale tradition.
What about Connie's family? How can we locate them in the fairytale tradition?
Revisit the story for echoes of Cinderella, Rapunzel, Bluebeard, The Spirit in the Bottle, The Three Little Pigs, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty, The Pied Piper of Hamlin. Sometimes an allusion is small in the context of the story, it may seem insignificant on its own, but added to ALL the others, it creates a motif that enhances our understanding of theme.
Task 3: View an original newscast about the 'Pied Piper of Tucson' for a briefer overview of the crimes, the setting, the killer, and his victims. How do you see the influence of this story on "Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?"
Task 4: Click the picture to access the original LIFE magazine article that Oates was initially inspired by. You don't have to read the entire thing (it's long), but skim through and consider how this story of a serial killer, combined with the archetypal Death and the Maiden myth to influence the story.
