Introduction "The Love Missive" (Carl Herpfer): Zoom in CLOSE to the painting and look for details that reveal the nature of the relationship being depicted. What interpretation can you make about the people in the painting and their situation? How do you know that? Look at their body language, the colors used, items that suggest other 'meanings', the setting, the use of light and shadow, etc. Consider the title. What is a missive? Pay attention to the details! DIG IN DEEP.
Your turn! Look through the 8 pieces below. First consider them individually. Then look at them in PAIRS. Where can you see commonalities or connections? What about contrast? Discuss in your small groups and prepare to discuss whole group.
TASK: Choose ONE image for a "close reading". Why are you drawn to this image? What is the subject of the image? Look closer. What details do you see? What interpretations can you make about the characters and/or setting base on these details? What "story" is being told? How are you arriving at your conclusions? Make notes, then write a 1/2 - 1 page "close reading" analysis of the selected piece.
Titles from top in pairs:
Christina's World/The Separation
The Migration Series: Panel 3/Nighthawks
The Two Fridas/Wheatfield with Crows
Do the titles reveal anything MORE to you? What and how so?
Do a little research. Who are the artists? When were the pieces created? How does this information inform your 'reading' of the piece?
