Choice Reading- Coming of Age and Dystopias
Schedule: Do the math! How much do you need to read each night/week to be finished in 3 weeks? This is an independent read, so no collaboration is required. ALL reading and journals will be completed outside of class while we are working on projects/poetry. Your reading and journals should be completed by Friday March 1.
Independent Choice Reading Week 1: Feb 12-16 (first third)
Journal Prompt: When you finish the first 3rd of your novel, make a journal entry about the main character(s) on whom the story focuses and what seems to be the developing plot arc for them. You can complete this entry in any way- traditional notes, SketchNotes, artwork, etc.
Independent Choice Reading Week 2: Feb 19-23 (second third)
Journal Prompt: Make a journal entry about the tensions and conflicts that are developing in this middle section of the novel. What challenges are the characters facing? Are they self-inflicted or is there an antagonist? Is the tension rising from the society itself? You can complete this entry in any way- traditional notes, SketchNotes, artwork, etc.
Independent Choice Reading Week 3: Feb 26- Mar 1 (final third)
Journal Prompt: Develop at least ONE Essential Question you believe your book asks us. Does it offer any definitive answer or is it ambiguous? You can complete this entry in any way- traditional notes, SketchNotes, artwork, etc
For each prompt, quickly note how your novel could match the topic. If it is IMPOSSIBLE to match your novel, choose another title from this year's reading (whole class or independent).
GOTHIC NOVELS
For our Choice Gothic Novels you should complete a weekly Journal Page/Entry: SketchNotes, 1 page writing, Plain Notes, Art Page, Graphic Org, etc- the style and topic are up to you! These 4 pages are for reflection and processing as you read. Use the prompts here if you need inspiration, or create something completely original!
Whole Novel Assignment: On Thursday, 4/21 you will turn in the following assignments:
Journal Entries- 2 per week X 4 weeks= 8 total journals
1 companion poem annotated for connections and a paragraph about those connections
1 prose passage excerpt annotated for an FRQ2
1 FRQ3 Outline or SketchNote- your choice. Choose an existing FRQ3 prompt and be sure that it is ON your product somewhere so that I know what question you're responding to
1st Semester Book Club:
This week we will meet in the library in our Book Clubs. Each day you will have a focused activity using your book club novels- be sure to have them and your journals in class each day. Your group can find a comfortable place to work- at a table or in the various seating areas- and meet there each day. Instructions for each day's work are on the slides!
Each week, you should journal a minimum of two entries based on the "Novel Talks Prompts". You are welcome to do traditional "notes", paragraph writing, SketchNotes, charts, etc. You must use 2 DIFFERENT prompts each week and include it on the page. You can dedicate a whole page to each entry or combine entries on a page.
Label your section for these journal entries with the title of your book, and each entry with the page numbers you're journaling and the prompt you're using.
