Design in the Visual Arts focuses on graphic design: creating logos, magazine spreads and covers, posters, and other brand concepts. Design combines art and life, finding creative and innovative ways to present ideas, and capture audiences. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of the media they use, bringing their own developing style to their design work. Students are required to develop ideas, and a brand over the year in consultation with the teacher and to formulate an individualised graphic style. Students must take inspiration from established artist models, ideas and techniques and will also study the nature of graphic design in the world. Design can utilise a range of approaches including sketching, collage, photography, digital processes, found materials, and installation work.
Students are encouraged to be innovative and will build on their knowledge of art techniques studied in Year 11. The course cost covers materials for the folio boards, and all paper and printing. Students will be expected to ideally have their own laptop running the Adobe Suite for use in this subject.
The recommended prerequisite for Design at Level 2 is a minimum of 16 credits in Level 1 Art, or HoD approval.
The prerequisite for Design at Level 3 is a minimum of 16 credits in Level 2 Design, or HoD or Curriculum Leader approval.
