Grade 5 - Day Trip to Kamberg Art

Naadiya Parag - Term 2 saw the further exploration of the early settlers in southern Africa. We journeyed to the Kamberg mountains to learn more about the Khoisan. Here are two reports written by the grade 5s about their experience:

On Tuesday, 08 August 2023, we went to see the rock art in the Kamberg. We got onto the buses and set off on an adventure. We were excited during the bus drive. It got a little boring so we found things to do. Jen and I found cards so we played a quick game.

We finally arrived but the bus drive left us stiff. Regardless, we were still so excited. After watching a brief video about the early settlers, we were ready for the hike. In all the excitement, Jen, Addi and I got separated. Luckily, I found Siphe and we started to walk.

As we hiked, we saw majestic, big plants and awesome views. As we came to the waterfall, we saw a group of eland which were loved by the Khoisan. It was truly breathtaking. We eventually arrived at the rock art. It was beautiful but the mountain path we climbed was very steep. After looking at the rock art, we headed back to the bus. I realised that I was more knowledgeable about the Khoisan after this trip. When we arrived back at Clifton, we were so tired.

William Linington - On the 8th of August 2023, the Grade 5 classes left for the Kamberg. We got on the bus and I sat next to my friends. The trip there was two hours long.

We arrived and it was very hot. We watched a video about rock art and then got ready to climb up the mountain. The guides said that we were about to hike 9km. We all thought that we would die. On the way up, it was so hot and so long. It was so tiring and my legs felt like jelly. We all felt so tired.

I was so happy when we reached the top, the rock art paintings were so cool and they were everywhere. When we were going back down the mountain, we swam in a very cold pool in the mountain.

We got back from the hike, said goodbye and thank you to the guides, and got onto the bus again. I sat next to my friends. The bus got so dirty from the dust but we arrived back at Clifton safe and sound.

Sophia Constantinou - We started our hike and it was boiling hot. We saw an Eland with its baby and then we stopped for a snack. At our first stop, we saw that there was water dripping over a rock where the San would wash.

After that, we saw some amazing rock art and then walked to a waterfall to swim. It was cold and shallow. We were able to drink the water because it was crystal clear. We hiked for quite a long time and saw some streams and some long green grass that was growing. We had finished the hike and we were all so proud of each other and ourselves.
