Google Slides Basics

Creating a New Google Slides Presentation

To create a new Google Slides presentation, you have two options. If you are already logged in to your Google Drive, you can click “New” and then “Google Slides.” Or, you can go to slides.google.com and click the plus sign above the “Blank” option or choose from a template. You will need to be logged into your district provided Google account for this second option.

Inserting and Formatting Slides

Once you have created your presentation, you will need to be able to work with the slides themselves. You can insert, duplicate, reorder, delete, and change the layout of slides. The video below shows you how to complete each of these tasks.

Adding Text, Shapes, and Images

Adding content to your slides can all be done from the “Insert” section of the menu. From here, you can insert many things, but in this section, we will go over just the basics: images, text, shapes, diagrams, and lines. A shortcut to all of these can also be found to the right of the cursor image on the toolbar below the menus.

Important note: Images added from the “Search the web” feature automatically fall under Google’s “Labeled for reuse with modification” copyright settings, meaning they can be used freely for any use.

The video below walks you through the basics of the “Insert” section.

Common Editing Needs in Google Slides

There are three main editing features you may utilize frequently in creating presentations: changing the background, changing the theme, and adding transitions to either slides or items on slides.

The first image and link will direct you to a guide on theme and background changes, and the second will direct you to a guide on transitions. The video also works through each of these skills.

Presenting Your Google Slides Presentation

Once your presentation is complete, it’s very easy to present it. Along the way, you can type notes for yourself in the bottom section of the screen that says “Click to add speaker notes.” You have the option to present with or without those notes, and from the beginning or from a particular slide.

The video will walk you through each of these options, publishing your presentation to the web, and some other special presenting features that Google Slides offers.
