World Langauge Courses

Most four year colleges require two or three years in the same world language; selective schools may prefer to see at least three years of the same world language. You should check with the college of your choice for the specific requirement.

American Sign Language 1

Students will develop basic communication skills in ASL, including fingerspelling, vocabulary, sentence structure, use of numerical information, and introductory grammar. Some ASL I topics will include family, animals, calendar, schooling, and weather. Students will learn and practice the five basic ASL parameters for communication. Emphasis will be placed on receptive and expressive skills through videos, interactive activities, dialogues, and cultural exploration. Students will also learn about Deaf history, culture, and the importance of ASL as a visual language.

American Sign Language 2

This course develops receptive and expressive ability. It will allow recognition and expression of more sophisticated grammatical features of American Sign Language. Students will increase fluency and accuracy in fingerspelling and numbers. In addition a historical and contemporary perspective of American Deaf culture will be explored. ASL II is largely an immersion course that will be taught primarily in ASL. Students are encouraged to use no voicing in this class.

American Sign Language 3

This course focuses on building narrative skills, moving from an informal to a more formal presentation. It also focuses on developing language skills necessary to explain ideas or concepts, to illustrate how things work, and to teach students specific language tools for talking about unforgettable moments in students’ lives. Other skills learned include in-depth details about discussing money matters and making major decisions. Also included in ASL 3 are the grammatical elements necessary to discuss cultural behaviors and customs. This is an immersion course which will be taught in ASL. Students are not allowed to voice in this class.

American Sign Language 4 Honors

This is a course that allows students to think a bit more freely about how to use ASL in a more fluid, thought provoking and meaningful way. During this course, students will read and discuss a book in a conversational setting. Students will be challenged to sign creatively at the roll of a die. Furthermore, students will be expected to complete bi-weekly interviews on topics that reach to our local community as well as our global community.

Chinese 1

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of Mandarin Chinese language and culture. Students will acquire communication skills- speaking, listening, reading, and writing – as well as the cultural context in which they are used. Students will learn the vocabulary and grammar structures to talk about family and friends, school, time and dates, and pets. Students will be able to identify Chinese Pinyin and intonations.

Chinese 2 and Chinese 2 Honors

This class is the second-year of Mandarin Chinese language and culture. The communication skills, speaking, listening, reading, and writing, are still emphasized at this level. Students will learn a variety of vocabulary and grammar structures that convey the meaning of present tense, past tense, future tense, or present perfect tense. Students will learn the vocabulary and grammar structures to discuss school, personal interests, food, community, and weather.

Spanish 1

This introductory course in the Spanish language and cultures will teach students the vocabulary essential to listen, speak, read, and write about families, schools, homes, clothes, foods, bodies, and favorite activities. Students will learn the present tense of regular verbs, irregular verbs, and reflexive verbs. They will also learn the gender and number of nouns, adjectives and articles, demonstrative and possessive adjectives, comparatives, and direct and indirect object pronouns. Students are required to memorize daily vocabulary, to participate in daily speaking activities, and to give spoken presentations in front of their classmates. The teacher will speak mostly Spanish during class; students are expected to respond and participate in Spanish.

Spanish 2 and Spanish 2 Honors

This intermediate course will expand on the vocabulary, grammar, culture, and communication skills learned in Spanish 1. Students will learn to use the preterite and imperfect past tenses to listen, speak, read, and write about people, neighborhoods, shopping, dining, health, and travel. The prerequisite is successful completion of both semesters of Spanish 1; teachers recommend students who earned at least a C- in Spanish 1. The teacher will speak almost entirely in Spanish during class.

The honors level is more challenging on all communication levels and requires more memorization of vocabulary and grammar. In addition to the two simple past tenses, students will learn past participles and the conditional mode, and will explore the themes of work and leisure activities. The prerequisite is a high level of proficiency in Spanish 1.

Spanish 3 and Spanish 3 Honors

This intermediate-advanced course will expand on the vocabulary, grammar, culture, and communication skills learned in Spanish 2. Students will learn to use the present, past, and future tenses to listen, speak, read, and write about relationships, community, health, work, leisure, and travel. The prerequisite is successful completion of both semesters of Spanish 2. The teacher and students will speak only Spanish in class.

The honors level is more challenging on all communication levels and focuses on building fluency in speaking and writing while discovering new cultures. In addition to the simple verb tenses, students will learn the imperfect progressive, the present perfect, and the present subjunctive mode, and will explore the themes of nature and the environment. The prerequisite is a high level of proficiency in Spanish 2 and showing an understanding of spoken and written language as well as interest in the culture.

AP Spanish Language 4

The focus of this advanced language and culture course is to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exam for college credit. Students will practice comprehension of authentic spoken and written texts, participate in conversations with native speakers, give spoken presentations on studied topics, write formal correspondence, and write persuasive source-based essays. Students will practice communication across the six AP themes: Global challenges, Science and technology, Contemporary life, Personal and public identities, Families and communities, and Beauty and aesthetics. In addition, students will learn to use all compound verb tenses, including the imperfect perfect, past perfect, the future perfect, and the past subjunctive mode. The prerequisite is successful completion of both semesters of Spanish 3. The teacher and students will speak only Spanish in class. Students are expected to follow the AP college board recommendations and dedicate time outside of class to reading and practicing the language in order to develop fluency; exploring cultural practices, products and perspectives; and practicing the three modes of communication (interpretive, communicative, and presentational). This course utilizes authentic materials such as newspapers, film, music, and books to prepare students for the exam.

The Advanced Placement Examination is a course requirement to earn a weighted grade. Students are responsible for meeting registration deadlines established by the testing coordinator. The CH-UH district will pay all fees associated with the AP test.
