Students need three units of science credit for graduation. One course must be in the physical sciences (PS), one course must be in the biological sciences (BS), and one course must be in the advanced sciences (AS).
Science Sequences
Prerequisites apply mostly to courses in the Honors-AP sequence. Anyone can enter any course once they have met the prerequisites. The grade levels given are typical for most students. Students are encouraged to take at least one AP or CCP science course prior to graduating and enrolling in college.
Students will study main themes including the chemistry of life; the cell including structure, function, transport, energy, and reproduction; the continuity of life (genetics); the history and diversity of life; ecology and body systems. The topics will be reinforced with laboratory experiments and special projects. This course helps to prepare students for the required Ohio End of Course assessment.
The honors level is designed as an accelerated academic offering which will prepare students to successfully complete an AP science course in junior or senior year. Laboratory exercises will be frequent, and application of lecture material is often required. This course is rigorous, will require more independent work from students, and will cover topics in greater depth.

This course introduces students to the study of chemistry. Topics include matter and change, atomic theory, periodic law, problem solving and stoichiometry (mass action equation), chemical reactions, thermochemistry, bonding, solutions, acid/bases and gas laws. Laboratory is included.
The honors level provides a solid foundation for students who plan to take AP Chemistry junior or senior year. Students are required to relate chemical concepts or techniques with laboratory or mathematical techniques to arrive at a conclusion. Emphasis is placed on a thorough understanding of chemical concepts, principles, and their application. Through the use of multiple concept labs, students will apply scientific methods to develop observation, reasoning, analysis and various laboratory skills.

Environmental Science is an interdisciplinary study that describes our use of the natural world, as well as the associated impact on human lives and geopolitics. Current and possible future remedies for environmental problems are addressed through the use of technology, community awareness, and on the individual level. Major topic areas include: introduction to ecological principles and ecosystems; extinction of species; human population dynamics; climate change; air and water quality and resources; solid waste; soil and agriculture; and nonrenewable and renewable energy.
