Art Department Mission

It is our mission to guide our students to become critical thinkers and creative problem solvers. The Visual Arts program aims to create visually literate and globally aware, contributing members of society; regardless of background and abilities. Part of our mission is to expose students to intricate tools such as X-Acto knives, linoleum gouges, hammers, chisels, drills, woodcutting tools, metalsmithing tools, torches, or heat guns, as well as work with substances such as mineral spirits, acids, polishes, patinas, workable fixative, oil-based paints, inks and printing presses. Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.

Advanced Crafts

Advanced Crafts is a hands-on course for learners with a wide range of abilities and creative strengths. Students explore techniques in mixed media and sculpture while building fine motor skills, problem-solving, and artistic expression in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Art Exploration

This course provides students an opportunity to explore foundational visual art concepts and develop their use of creative processes. The emphasis of this course will be to introduce students to the elements and principles of design. This introduction will expose students to drawing, painting and sculptural studies. Students will develop skills related to studio, ceramics, crafts, photography and metal arts.

Ceramics / Crafts I

In this course, students will explore three-dimensional arts and crafts. Students will work with clay, fiber and mixed media as they learn about functional/non-functional artwork, sculptures in round/relief. Methods of pinch, coil, and slab will be explored. A supply kit is required for this course and will be provided by the teacher when the course fee is paid.

Photography I

In this beginner photography course, students will learn essential skills using digital cameras, focusing on the elements and principles of design, such as composition and balance. They'll also explore key photography concepts like exposure, focus, and lighting. The course introduces graphic design basics, emphasizing how design principles apply to photography and visual storytelling. The course includes an introduction to Adobe Photoshop, teaching basic editing techniques to enhance their photos.

Metals / Jewelry Art I

This course will explore the process of jewelry making. Mediums that will be explored are paper, clay, glass, metal and silver. Techniques and concepts of metalsmithing such as piercing, forming, soldering and stone setting will be introduced. All projects incorporate elements and principles of design and place an emphasis on craftsmanship and personal expression. A supply kit is required for this course and will be provided by the teacher when the course fee is paid.

Studio Art I

Areas of study include compositional drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, figure drawing, and painting. This course introduces the student to self-expression through creative seeing and thinking. It is a studio course designed to develop the student's ability to graphically represent what is seen.

Ceramics / Crafts II

This course is for students who have a strong interest in exploring more

sophisticated concepts and technique of three-dimensional sculpture. Emphasis will be on student choice in project development and students putting their work on display during art exhibitions. Students will complete artist statements and critiques. A supply kit is required for this course and will be provided by the teacher when the course fee is paid.

Photography II

In this Photo II course, students will build on basic skills, exploring advanced photography techniques like lighting, long exposures, and creative framing. They'll apply graphic design principles such as contrast and hierarchy to enhance their images. The course also covers advanced Photoshop editing, including retouching, compositing, double exposure and working with layers. By the end, students will refine their photography and design skills.

Metals / Jewelry Art II

This course is a continuation of Metals/Jewelry Arts 1. More advanced techniques in the jewelry-making process will be explored. Students will learn about the Cloisonne enameling process, casting, setting stones, photo etching and forming metal. Students will produce Cloisonne enamel pieces, rings, box, picture frames and a line of jewelry for the school or community art exhibit. Students will also create works for the Cleveland Clinic eXpressions Art Show, the Scholastic Art Show and the Governor’s Art Show.

Areas of study include figure drawing, perspective, printmaking, watercolor, tempera, oil, collage, additive and subtractive sculpture, and drawing. Students must purchase basic materials for this course.

Ceramics / Crafts III Honors

This course encompasses art criticism, aesthetics, and production and leads to the creation of portfolio quality works. Areas of study are designed for students with a strong interest in continuing in craft areas. Instruction and information provides for students to develop aesthetic style and artistic direction. There is a strong emphasis on personal self-expression and development of an individualized style. Students will be engaged in both instructor-directed and self-directed opportunities. This course will prepare students to take Advanced Placement Art.

Studio Art III Honors

This course encompasses an advanced application of technique, conceptual development, aesthetics, and historical contextualization/analysis. Areas of study include figure drawing, personal documentation, pastel, oil acrylic and watercolor painting, symbolic interpretation, fantasy visualization, and printmaking. A portion of the course is a senior workshop during which emphasis is placed on student independence in choice of direction and technique. Students will be engaged in both instructor-directed and self-directed learning opportunities. Guidance is given for portfolio development. Exhibition required. Students must purchase basic materials, This course is designed as an accelerated academic offering and can be taken independently or in conjunction with Advanced Placement Art

Photography III Honors

This course encompasses an advanced application of technique, conceptual development, aesthetics, and historical contextualization/analysis. This class emphasizes the building of your photography portfolio. Students are required to take photos throughout the summer to start their portfolio at the start of the school year. Each student explores a personal, central interest as intensively as possible and utilizes a variety of methods. Students build upon the previous year’s techniques and photographic fundamentals. Students will be engaged in both instructor-directed and self-directed learning opportunities. This course is designed as an accelerated academic offering and can be taken independently or in conjunction with Advanced Placement 2D Art.

AP Art and Design (Drawing/2D/3D)

Advanced Placement Studio Art is intended for the highly motivated student interested in the serious study of art. Advanced Placement work involves significantly more time than the typical high school course and is not for the casually interested. Each student explores a personal, central interest as intensively as possible and utilizes a variety of methods and materials in order to extend their repertoire of visual experiences. At the conclusion of the course, a portfolio of 15 to 20 works must be submitted to the instructor. All of these pieces will be submitted to the College Board.
