In February 2024, the CBC/Radio-Canada laid a solid foundation for transformative change within our organization by launching a National Indigenous Strategy (NIS) named "Strengthening Relations, Walking Together".This page provides visibility into our NIS work, including MarComms's outcomes and commitments.
The Indigenous Office has been leading many teams in action planning workshops that were critical to ensuring we see the full operationalization of the strategic objectives and the actions outlined in the NIS over the next three years. These workshops have been essential to identify the Team Leads of all 49 actions and to craft a robust implementation plan for Year 1.
A special thank you to Gabriela Klimes, Director, News Marketing & Community Experiences, and Kerry Fraser, Director, Brand & Community, from the Marketing Team for their exceptional contributions. They have gone above and beyond, spearheading our team’s NIS commitment by appointing representatives across teams and maintaining regular meetings with the Indigenous Office. Their leadership has resulted in an outstanding Year 1 Marcomms commitment and outcome report.
The MarComms NIS Working Group comprises representatives from across the department's teams, meeting monthly to report on the status of their work, which is shared and tracked monthly with the Indigenous Office. A warm thank you to:
Audience Research: Erin Adams
Local Communications: Mary Webster, Jessica Chan
Operations: Stacee Samuel, Angela Palladine
Public Relations, Events & Partnership: Sharon Tindyebwa (please note that Sharon is now within the Marketing team)
In the Strategy, we committed to advancing four key areas of action: Narratives, People, Relationships and Truth and Reconciliation.

As teams, managers, and staff, there are many ways we can support the NIS. Whether it's integrating Indigenous perspectives into decision-making processes, fostering inclusive work environments, or championing initiatives that advance the Strategy in all of our work, each of us has a role to play in driving positive change. However, the support starts by growing our understanding of Indigenous realities, so as part of MarComm’s National Indigenous Strategy commitments, we are all encouraged to take the self-paced Indigenous Canada course by the University of Alberta, recommended by the Indigenous Office and L&D. Find more information on the Training & Development page.
If you would like someone from the Indigenous Office to join your team or department to workshop ways to embed the Strategy in your work, let our team leads know. For inquiries, suggestions, or to get involved, please don't hesitate to reach out to Indigenous.Strategy@cbc.ca.
