Susie Pylka is a retired teacher from Carlton. She used to work at South Terrace teaching mostly 5th grade. She grew up in Sawyer and went to school there until 5th grade, then moved to Carlton in 6th and graduated here. Then, she went to UMD for her college education. She has four kids named Matthew, Ross, Nathan, and Sarah. Her husband's name is Bruce.

Susie went to school in Sawyer for her elementary career: 1st--5th. After the Sawyer school got shut down, all the 6th and 7th grade students from Sawyer moved to Carlton. They had to put dividers up in the gymnasium to separate classes because there were a lot of students. Susie was there for part of the year and then got sent to the elementary school in Carlton. The elementary school was still being built when Susie started there. She graduated from Carlton High School in 1969. After graduating high school, Susie went to UMD and she graduated there and then became a teacher.

Some interesting facts about Susie are: she enjoys picking agates and she also liked to build forts in the woods. She also loved skating. In her interview she stated: “...they had a skating rink... so in the evenings I’d go up when I got home from school, grab my skates, run up there and they had a light on so you'd go skate.”

As a child, Susie liked to play outside, ride bikes, and play school in the playhouse she had outside. In her interview, she stated: “When I was young we…rode bicycles a lot, went outside and played from morning till evening, and came in for lunch.” Susie now likes to go on walks, go on pontoon rides, babysit her grandchildren, and attend her grandchildren's sporting events when she can.
