2018: Power Up

2018: POWER UP season

In 2018's season, CyBears competed at the Seven Rivers week zero event as well as the Northern Lights Duluth regional. The team did splendid this season, they made many improvements on their journey. Their robot, Big Babushka Bandit and three-day build bot the Spaghetti Monster participated at EMCC, Minnie Mini, and MMR preseason competitions. A large take away from this season was the teams they were able to help over the season. We helped Zoom robotics, a rookie FRC team in Zumbrota-Mazeppa with electrical workshops and setting up their electrical board. At MMR, they became friends with Team 2667 when the team lent them their Ri3d.

Big Babushka bandit

This seasons robot was named the "Big Babushka Bandit" by the team. Babushka could lift the power blocks to all possible vantage points of cube placement. Its lifter uses PID to lift each block to a precise location. There was a storage section for cubes the robot picked up, this was so it wouldn't lose any while moving around and could shoot them in any direction. The Babushka operated on a 6-wheel drop-center drive tank base that was powered by four Cim motors. There was also a design concept for a climbing mechanism that was never implemented.

Awards

Chad poses with his Woody Flowers award.

At the Duluth Northern Lights regional, CyBears received the Team Spirit award. The entire team earned this award by displaying their love and passion for robotics that was unrivaled. Mentor Chad Jorgenson also received the Woody Flowers award, this was a massive achievement for both Chad and the team. Chad will now be recognized each year at this event and welcome every new Woody Flowers award winner.

What we learned

In 2018's season, the CyBears experimented with a new organizational process called SCRUM. From this process, they gathered that breaking tasks into bite-sized piece was incredibly helpful. But, adding to the backlog at a consistent rate was too much for one person to handle. This means they are unable to complete tasks to the best of their ability. That leads to forgetting things like weight limit. The team was a lot more ambitious with their robot design this season, subsequently lead them to have a robot they could be proud of. In all of that good, some mishaps are sure to occur. This season, the CyBears were reminded of the importance of drive team practice as they got virtually none. Their autonomous team got significantly less time than they needed, leading to disruption. Through this, the CyBears were able to learn more about simulation and prototyping - how to build something that does well enough to represent its purpose through wooden models and weights
