The 2017 FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) game was titled "FIRST STEAMWORKS." Set in a whimsical steampunk-inspired world, the game featured two alliances of three teams each working together to prepare their airship for liftoff. Teams scored points by collecting and delivering fuel (plastic wiffle balls) into boilers to build up steam pressure and by placing gears on pegs for human players to install on the airship’s rotors. Successful rotor activation earned significant points, making gear delivery a key strategy. In the final 30 seconds of the match, robots attempted to climb ropes attached to the airship, simulating boarding before takeoff. The climb was a high-stakes endgame challenge that often determined match outcomes. "FIRST STEAMWORKS" blended mechanical precision, teamwork, and a visually unique theme to create one of the most distinctive games in FRC history.
