I find a lot of excitement in twisted ideas of reality. My family has told me I have a dark mind, I’m always thinking about the most gory and raw way to tell a story or express myself. There’s a certain amount of comfort seeing reality in a way that shows the chaos we have created for ourselves. I see humans as self destructive animals. We are smart, as a collective group, however we are incredibly thoughtless. Even though we have everything that no-one could imagine 100 years ago, we still need more. We forget every single day to take a breath and appreciate the real reason why we’re here. The tension we feel is as clouded as the atmosphere that we’re destroying; we feed upon the animals and weave them into clothing and harvest plants through poisoning, burning, and controlling. I often hope the Earth will get a break, and nature has its opportunity to thrive in its own environment.
Out of this realization of human fault, art is both the expression of that twisted reality and a source of joy. I draw because I love it, there is nothing more entertaining and imaginative as creating. From the onset of conceptualizing a character or scene, I am intertwined with the story. It is in my instinctual nature to look to art to create where there was nothing; “Pick up a pencil, find a surface, and do your thing”. Whenever I was alone as a kid, I was drawing. At one point it became a legitimate problem, drawing on the walls of our home became going out and drawing on the walls of someone else’s home, and leaving it there for them to discover when we leave. There isn’t a single time where I get bored and don’t want to draw. In school I never listened to a single word the teacher said, instead I created these weird creatures, portraits, or whatever came to my mind. My mother has this story of going into the store with me sitting in the cart and drawing, an old woman sees this adorable little girl with golden curls and asks “What are you drawing, sweetie?” I hold it up to her and say “Well, this right here is a big monster and he is eating all these people in the village.” with a big grin on my face.
My art represents that duality; the conflict of humanity’s faults against a crumbling environment and the need of humans to find solace and expression through creation and exploration.
