“In photography there is a reality so subtle that it becomes more real than reality.”
- Alfred Stieglitz
This unit will offer an in-depth look into the digital world of photography. While working hands on with DSLR and mirrorless cameras to master the fundamentals of photography, we will use technology to explore the many possibilities that the digital age has introduced into photographs and editing digital images.
This unit will balance two important aspects of digital photography: first, photography production practices, and second, photographic manipulation in post-production. Although both of these aspects have unique elements, we will practice them simultaneously. Some projects will address only one of these aspects, while other projects will address both in a complimentary process.
While studying photography production, we will learn ways that digital photography can accent and articulate what the naked eye sees through exploration of landscape, portraiture, macro, action, and abstract effected photography. Successful students in this area will better understand how to prepare their camera and their scene for an intended outcome or emotion through lighting, framing, perspective, angle, toning, and other photographic practices. Equally balanced with hardware mastery will be the importance of using software and understanding the RAW format digital photography workflow.
While studying photographic manipulation, students will master advanced software techniques through the Adobe Photoshop creative suite. The projects will engage students in non-destructive Photoshop practices like masking, layering, adjustment layering, combining assets, file formatting, and preparing digital imagery for print.
Unit 1 EU I. DSLR Camera builds and identifying the components in DSLR hardware.
Unit 1 EU II. Understanding the differences and unique benefits to a variety of lens types including wide, standard, telephoto, macro, and other lenses. Students should be able to identify the best available lens for their shots and analyze a lens for its focal length, aperture, mount format, optical zoom, and more.
Unit 1 EU III. Mastery of the Exposure Triangle for manual photography, including balancing and compensating between shutter speed, f-stop, and ISO.
Unit 1 EU IV. Practicing photographic composition techniques such as leading lines, symmetry and patterns, depth, framing, cropping, balance, subject contrasting, rule of thirds, golden ratio, and more.
Unit 1 EU V. Exploration and understanding of lighting for photography, both natural and artificial.
Unit 1 EU VI. Mastery of the use and purposes of essential photograph file formats including JPEG, TIF, PNG, RAW, DNG, PSD, PSB, GIF, and more.
Unit 1 EU VII. Mastery of the Digital Photography workflow from pre-production to printing using RAW editing techniques and a step-by-step workflow between Adobe Lightroom and Photoshop's software.
Unit 1 EU VIII. Exploration and understanding of special effects and advanced manipulation techniques in Photoshop.
Unit 1 EU IX. Understanding the best time-saving practices for various tools and abilities of bitmap editing in Adobe Photoshop.
Unit 1 EU X. Non-destructive Photoshop editing with use of selections, masks, adjustment layers, refined edges, smart objects, layer blend modes, layer effects, 3D postcarding, feathering, and many more elements of the software.
Unit 1 EU XI. Advanced Photoshop re-touching and editing techniques such as photo restorations, studio portrait retouching, liquifying, dodge/burning, frequency separation techniques, adjustment layer masking, color corrections, and more.
Unit 1 EU XII. Photographic presentation methods and export methods for print and web use.
