At KS5 we offer AQA A-level Media and BTEC L1/2 Creative Media Production (equivalent to GCSE).
For the A-Level course students will focus on the topics of representation, industry, language and audiences across a range of media texts such as: newspapers, magazines, adverts, music videos, television, radio, online and participatory media and video games. In addition, students will study and apply a range of critical theorists, using this information to support their evaluative responses to various media forms. This will be examined in two exams totaling 70% of the course. Furthermore, there is a non-exam assessment component (30%) where students have the opportunity to create their own media product in response to a brief.
For the BTEC option students complete two units, the first focused on learning about a range of media products and the second concentrating on learning how to deploy a range of production techniques. Both of these units are assessed using internally assessed tasks. The final unit is the culmination of the theoretical content and acquisition of practical skills. Students are set a brief by the exam board and produce a media product during a 9 hour practical exam.
