DO NOT USE THE PAINTBUCKET TOOL.
If you do it can leave gaps in the colour and other artifacts. Additionally each time you use the paint bucket it creates a new vector which you need to manipulate if you make changes. Always fill colours using the Stroke and Fill (Shift+Ctrl+F).
NEVER USE THE PAINTBUCKET.
Turn on the Grid
You can turn on a grid that you can set to any dimensions. This can be done in the File > Document Properties menu (Shift + Ctrl + D). Select Grids and Click New. You can then set this up in mm or cm.
Keep the Fill and Stroke menu open
For almost all projects having the Fill and Stroke (Shift+Ctrl+F) menu open is super helpful.
Gradients are Magic!
Applying a gradient can turn your creation into a work of art. Apply a gradient either through the Fill and Stroke menu or gradient tool.
Turn the Snapping tools on and off as you need them
There are a number of snapping options in Inkscape that can be super useful for getting parts to fit together however it will often result in your vectors jumping wildly round the screen. Just click the snapping button at the top right hand corner to toggle.
Z-Order
Layering in images is very important. To change the z layer click on the shape you want to move and press the following keys on the right hand side of the keyboard.
