In this activity, you will create a design featuring your name. Photographs showing your interests will appear inside the letters of your name.
You will practise:
opening images as layers
organising and renaming layers
moving and scaling images
using a layer group
creating text
turning text into a selection
using a layer mask
adding a background
saving and exporting your work
Open Gimp
Select File > New to create a new canvas.
Set the image size to:
Width: 1600 px
Height: 900 px
Select OK
Press File > Save. Make sure you save your work to the H: Drive. This is the drive with your Student Id and has (H:) at the end.
Name it appropriately i.e. Toni_nameCollage.xcf
Choose one of these background options:
Select the Background layer.
Choose a colour using the Foreground Colour box.
Use the Bucket Fill Tool to fill the background.
Select File → Open as Layers.
Find and open the photograph you want to use.
Use the Scale Tool to resize the image so it covers the canvas.
Move this layer to the bottom of the Layers panel.
Choose a background that allows your name to be seen clearly. A simple or slightly darker background will usually work better than a very detailed image.
In the Layers panel, select New Layer Group.
Rename the group:
NAME COLLAGE
All the photographs that will appear inside your name will go inside this group.
Choose approximately five to eight photographs showing things you enjoy or that represent you.
These might include:
a sport or activity
music, films or games
favourite foods
animals
places
hobbies
colours or patterns
friends or whānau, where appropriate
To add each photograph:
Be on your Name Collage group
Select File → Open as Layers.
Find and open the photographs - CTRL click allows you to select more than one.
Under the layers panel you should see them all in the Name Collage group. If not, drag the photograph layers into the NAME COLLAGE group.
If your files were already named appropriately you can ignore this step - otherwise rename the layers so you can identify it easily.
Use the Move Tool (M), Scale Tool (Shift + S) and Rotate Tool (Shift + R) to organise the photographs. You may also want to remove backgrounds using the skills you learn in the sheep tutorial.
In the layers panel you can move the photo order up or down, to get the ordering right.
Create one large rectangular collage across the middle of the canvas.
Make sure:
the images overlap slightly
there are no empty gaps
the collage is wider than your name will be
important parts of the photographs are not hidden behind other images
each photograph is on its own layer
Do not worry about the outside edges of the collage. These will be hidden later.
Select the Text Tool.
Click near the centre of the canvas.
Type your first name.
Highlight the text and choose a thick, bold font.
Increase the font size until the name fills most of the width of the canvas.
Use the Move Tool to position the name over the collage.
A bold font works best because there is more space inside each letter for the photographs to be seen.
If your name is in the name collage folder move it out and above that group
Find the name’s text layer in the Layers panel.
Right-click the text layer.
Select Alpha to Selection.
You should now see a moving dotted line around every letter. This means that the shape of your name has become a selection.
Do not remove the selection yet.
In the Layers panel, select the NAME COLLAGE layer group.
Right-click the layer group.
Select Add Layer Mask.
Choose Selection.
Select Add.
To see the images hide the original text layer by clicking its eye icon.
The photographs should now only be visible inside the letters of your name.
Select Select → None or CTRL + SHIFT + A to remove the moving dotted line.
The photographs are still on separate layers inside the group.
To improve the placement of an image:
Open the NAME COLLAGE group using the small arrow beside it.
Select the photograph you want to change.
Use the Move Tool to reposition it.
Use the Scale Tool if it needs to be larger or smaller.
Only the parts inside the letters will be visible, but the complete photographs remain inside the group.
Check the following:
Can the name be read easily?
Are the photographs large enough to recognise?
Are there any empty areas inside the letters?
Is there a good variety of photographs?
Does the background support the name rather than distract from it?
Is the name positioned neatly on the canvas?
You may also add:
a short sentence about yourself
a border around the canvas
small decorative shapes
a shadow behind the name - Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow
a colour overlay on the background
Keep the name as the main focus of the design.
You should have Saved in Step 2. If not check there for how.
Otherwise you should be able to use the shortcut CTRL + S or File > Save.
Press File > Export As.
Your Gimp file should already be in your H: Drive and named appropriately.
If it does not have the file extension .jpg already go to Select File Type options at bottom, click the + then find JPEG
Then click Export.
Leave as is
Then click Export.
