Catharine "Kate" Griffith Cheney

Catherine "Kate" (Griffith) Cheney was born on November 22, 1826 in the Town of Ellery. She died on April 18, 1924 at the age of 97. She was the daughter of John and Tryphena (Bemus) Griffin, the wife of Asa Cheney. She had always resided within a mile of her birthplace. She and Asa had eleven children. She was a member of the Universalist Church of Bemus Point and of Union Grange (Jamestown, NY), the county grange and NYS Grange. She was a delegate at one time to a convention of the NY State Grange in which she had always taken an active part until recent years. She She was one of the pioneer suffragists in Chautauqua County and was one of the group of women who organized the first society for the enfranchisement of women in this county. It was gratifying to her that she lived to cast her ballot for President in the election of 1920. (She voted for Warren G. Harding in the presidential election.)
