We feel our program logo embodies the growth our program has undergone over the past five years. We have worked to improve, expand, and retool the facets of our program to best meet the needs of our students and community. The number of students incorporated into the program has continued to grow along with the experiences we provide.
From year to year, we've worked to expand the number of teachers in our program, increase and expand how project-based learning plays a central role in our curriculum, and diversify the variety of students we serve by now having general education, enrichment, High school level, co-taught, and para-supported classes. RHMS's STEAM program's vision is "To provide learning experiences that reflect the changing fields, expectations, and applications that will prepare our students for the challenges of tomorrow." Our staff aims to model that vision by including a diverse group of learners interested in participating in experiences that will prepare them for these challenges through our program.
Student collaboration on building ROVs
Teacher collaboration on planning the ROV project for students
Within the STEAM program educators, we are responsible for leading by example. We've taken the approach that our teachers are expected at every level to exemplify collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and creativity through how they plan, the projects they create, and how they work together. Each teacher has their own engineering notebook, just like the students, that they use as a part of all planning meetings to create content for their students that incorporates the content of not just their course but science, technology, engineering, art, and math.
Nowhere is the mission for our program more evident than in our greenhouse. Established in August of 2021 after three years of saving from grants the RHMS Grows Aquaponics Greenhouse is where our students take their knowledge and skills and put it into real practice. Our students are building a 7,000 gallon aquaponics system that by September 2022 with a weekly yield of approximately 87 lbs. of Sparx Romain Lettuce will not only be able meet the weekly needs of Richmond Hill Middle, but enough to make an impact in the local soup kitchen to feed families in need. In addition to the students running and maintaining this business. The students will balance and monitor the income from the RHMS Grows greenhouse from the district as a USDA Farm To Table program and determine where funds received from the district for the lettuce should be spent to improve and maintain the greenhouse as well as buy supplies that can be used on supplies and lessons for students in and outside of the RHMS STEAM program.
