The RHMS STEAM program has grown with increasing popularity among parents and students. Since the creation of our revamped STEAM program, the program has expanded from four sections at each grade level to six in 8th, and 7th grade and ten out of the twenty-three classes in 6th grade are STEAM classes. This has resulted in having three teams of teachers in one grade level participating in STEAM since the start of our revamped program.
Richmond Hill Middle has a large community it serves daily, with just under 2,000 students. Our school is centered on relationships, instruction, and experiences. We've been very purposeful about what and how we expand our program. We have taken a conscious approach to expanding the program to ensure it is as equitable as possible. A sub-committee within our program meets each month to review our recruitment process and the program's curriculum. The sole purpose of this group is to make recommendations to ensure that we are showing a variety of professionals in our program and recruiting diverse learners from all ethnic, socioeconomic, and learning backgrounds. Personalization has so far been our greatest tool in helping recruit students. This school year, we made over 300 phone calls to rising 6th, 7th, and 8th-grade parents to inform them about the program and our application process and invite them to our Winter STEAM Showcase.
