RHMS STEAM program students are required to have engineering notebooks and take them to all STEAM program classes. In addition, students have reference posters for important concepts from art, videography, coding, and the engineering process in every classroom. Each class within the program focuses on using the engineering design process as regularly as they can to coincide with all project-based learning experiences, whether it be a national STEAM competition or generating a monster that involves an area of study such as geologic events, meteorological, chemical, etc. in their 9th-grade literature class. These notebooks are used in these classes to ensure students see a connection between the engineering process and all the aspects of their lives and that the process could be used to create the best solution or result.
While these notebooks are not intended to be graded, students do receive teacher feedback on their ability to document and use the process. Within the program teachers, all have a set of STEAM stickers that are given to students by recognition for solid growth using the process and the problem solving used in the process that they document in their notebook.
