Letter from the Editors

Dear Readers,

As we embark on another edition of The Polyglot, we are filled with excitement and anticipation for the diverse array of tales that await within its pages. This year’s theme, “Tales,” beckons us to delve into the rich tapestry of tradition and novelty that stories weave across cultures and languages. Tales hold a special place in human experience—they are the vessels through which we pass down our histories, beliefs, and values from one generation to the next. They serve as bridges between the past and the present, between different cultures and communities. In exploring tales, we uncover not only the similarities that bind us together but also the nuances that make each culture unique. Language is intimately intertwined with the art of storytelling. It is the tool we use to breathe life into characters, to evoke emotions in our readers, and to transport them to worlds both familiar and fantastical. One of the hallmarks of The Polyglot is our commitment to showcasing the linguistic diversity present at Brown. By publishing student work in multiple languages, we not only celebrate the myriad voices within our community but also provide a platform for those whose stories may otherwise go unheard. In doing so, we affirm the importance of linguistic diversity and honor the multiplicity of ways in which stories can be told.

In this issue, you will find an eclectic mix of tales—some tales are steeped in age-old traditions, while others overflow with fictional

narratives, tales of identity, and the importance of preserving cultural heritage through storytelling. From the lyrical verses of poetry to the immersive worlds of fiction, each piece invites you to embark on a journey of discovery and wonder. Additionally, we have created a complementary website housing additional multilingual submissions that couldn’t be accommodated in our printed edition due to page constraints. While full pieces are available online, some shorter stories are excerpted in the print copy. 

As you immerse yourself in the pages of The Polyglot, we encourage you to reflect on the power of tales to transcend language barriers

and forge connections across cultures. May these stories inspire you, challenge you, and ultimately, remind you of the boundless possibilities that language and storytelling afford us. Happy reading!
