Toe toe

Toe toe has a thin stalk and at the top it has a beige, bushy, fluffy plant that curves to the side. It kind of looks like a farm axe for cutting plants.

The leaves of toe toe were used by māori to make baskets, kites, mats, wall linings and roof thatching.

It’s important to grow more toe toe because it is an amazing looking native plant and they are special to us. It also keeps native birds warm and cozy.

Is that toe toe or pampas?

This is pampas

You might not believe it but it’s almost as if toe toe has a twin!

Toe toe and pampas can look quite similar. Pampas is actually an obnoxious weed.

You can tell the difference between toe toe and pampas grass by the shape of the flower head. Toe toe often bends to the side while pampas grows straight up.

Toe toe produces a drooping, light golden-yellow flower head from September to January. Pampas grass points upright producing straight and fluffy white/pinkish flower heads from January to June.

Toe toe leaves are dark green and if you look closely you can see little light green dots. Pampas leaves have light green leaves with lines on it.
