CURLY PERSPECTIVE
CURLY PERSPECTIVE
With this portfolio, I wanted to artistically portray the ever-evolving relationship I've had with my hair, and further, my identity, from childhood to present. Growing up as someone who is half white and half African-American, in a predominantly white community, has often led me to question who I am and how I fit into society; my hair, in particular being the facet of my identity that I struggle with most. The pieces in this portfolio cover a range of emotions from, excitement to remorse to confusion to acceptance, and with them, I aim to provide a look into who I am and how my hair has led me to better understand myself. Through each piece, I wove a theme of circles/spherical movement for one, because it's a shape I've seen in my hair through all stages of my life, and two, in order to truly connect each piece. While creating these pieces, I experimented with various new methods such as impasto painting, water-soluble dye, mixed media collage, and digital drawing to ensure that the end result was material I felt authentically represented myself and my hair journey. The pieces that came of this are glimpses into how I see myself and how I feel I am seen by the world around me.
