How do family traditions and values shape us into the people we become?
My family places huge emphasis on the value of family, learning, the environment, and Judaism. These values shaped the way that I think, and guided the formation of my portfolio. Initially drawn to ceramics because of my grandmother's connection to clay and functional pottery, I began experimenting with different techniques. I developed a portfolio to express my own voice while being guided by family values.
"Inverted Bookshelf" and "Challah" reference Judaism. Flipping the books shows the pages that have touched four generations, and keeping the Jewish section the correct alignment keeps these values at the forefront. The challah is a family recipe, but I have made it mine by crafting a contemporary braid.
My family instilled environmental values into my upbringing, allowing me to create environmentally conscious pieces. "Deconstructed Camping Scene" shows how insignificant we are in the broader scope of the environment, and even when we try to have a very non synthetic experience, we do this using large amounts of synthetic material. "Manipulated Metamorphosis" shows the two paths of us reacting with nature. "Topography Map" morphs a very inorganic design into a topographic mountain range, that replicates a handprint. "Narrative Vessel" and "Canoe" show personal experiences and my love of camping.
Each media allowed me to revise and practice new techniques. All of these values guide me, but I am able to see these traditions through my own lens.
