Rachel Gunderson

Hi I'm Rachel Gunderson!

Welcome to my senior show, Unnatural Selection.

In Unnatural Selection, I was guided by my inquiry question: how do unnatural methods in research intersect with the natural life that science aims to understand? At an internship at a lab, I conducted a project on heart cell regeneration using genetically modified mice. Although the role of animals in research is necessary, it felt unnatural. Using this experience as a catalyst for my work, I experimented with multiple mediums to convey the relationship between natural and unnatural practices in science. This is demonstrated by the use of inorganic materials like plastic pipet tips that are contrasted by natural forms and mediums such as wood or clay. I also experimented with scale, from realistic sized forms to a six foot installation. I began by taking my inquiry question literally: making pieces that displayed clear connections to research. However, through revision of my guiding query, I incorporated abstract elements through wheel throwing and large scale construction while still using contrasting materials and surface designs. In all, my pieces explore the broader dichotomy between the unnatural processes in research and natural life that we as humans attempt to decipher.
