Everyone in the Marder lab must undergo Hazardous Waste and Lab Safety Training through Traincaster and keep up-to-date with renewals and new courses during their time in the lab.
There are a few Hazardous Waste sites that are helpful to know about within the Science Complex and Marder Lab. ***If you are unsure about how to dispose of something ASK someone (preferably the Lab Manager).***
These can all be disposed of within the Marder lab. The main hazardous waste accumulation area is in the fume hood in the main part of the lab.
If you don’t see a container with a compatible chemical to dispose of your substance please make a new waste container and label it properly.
Once waste containers are full add the date and call for waste pick up (x6-2561 from a lab phone).
Some chemicals can be disposed of via the drain; a list of these items is posted above each sink in the main lab area.
Sharps containers and glass waste containers are located by the fume hood and in the dissection area.
Once full, the glass waste containers need to be securely taped shut. The custodial staff who takes care of the floor can dispose of them for you; place the taped container in the hallway.
Sharps containers can be picked up by calling for waste pick up (x6-2561 from a lab phone)
There are several containers located where Edison-Lecks, Abelson, and Gerstenzang all meet at the top of the large ramp. There are bins for different types of batteries and light bulbs, as well as ink/toner cartridges here. Please make sure to put the items in the correct bin and close them once you’re done adding items.
Lab printer toner cartridges can be recycled! Put the empty cartridge back in the box, affix the shipping label (included in the internal paper booklet) to the outside, and bring it down to Lab Supplies Receiving.
The electronics waste is located in the lower level of Feldberg by the vending machines at the entrance to the building.
Before putting items down there, keep computers, mice, keyboards, etc. if they work and can be used by the lab in the future. If computers cannot be reused check with Lynn Rardin (x6-4914) to see if he wants them for the department. If mice, keyboards, speakers, etc. are broken they can be readily disposed of.
The Millipore water filter waste is located in the basement of the Shapiro Science Center. If you take the elevator down to the lowest level it is directly across the hall when the doors open.
