All Service Contractors are responsible for performing the work of contracts in compliance with all environmental, health and safety laws and regulations. Contractors shall be subject to the provisions of the Contractor EH&S Guidelines, which have been prepared for the protection and safety of all employees, neighbors and property, recognizing that Contractor’s work can potentially affect the safety of personnel and property. The Contractor EH&S Guidelines shall be provided to Service Contractors to communicate the site-specific safety and environmental procedures. Questions regarding these guidelines may be directed to Bonneville Labs Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).

These contractor safety standards shall be in effect whenever contractors are on the premises of Bonneville Labs facility. Bonneville Labs requirements are expected to be followed by all contractors and visitors. Failure to comply with these rules may be cause for dismissal from the Bonneville Labs property.
Acts of conduct including, but not limited to, the following may result in immediate removal from the site:
Failure to dispose of personal trash.
Failure to comply with minimum personal protective equipment standards and housekeeping requirements.
Failure to obtain/comply with appropriate safe work permits.
Improper disposal of hazardous, biohazardous materials or waste.
Destruction, abuse or removal of any property belonging to the BV Labs facility.
Smoking onsite.
Possession or use of alcohol, illegal drugs or weapons.
Eating or drinking outside designated areas.
Discriminatory, harassing or offensive conduct of any type.
Failure to comply with appropriate area personal protective equipment when working in areas identified.
Stop all work
Go to the nearest safe phone and dial 9-1-1.
Shut off electrical equipment and machines, if possible.
Exit the building by walking to the nearest emergency exit.
Don’t stop to pick up personal belongings.
Activate the alarm on the way out.
Proceed to the evacuation assembly area (refer to the Evacuation Plan) and wait there for further instructions.
Do not re-enter the building until you are instructed to do so.
Do not just leave the site - check in at the assembly area until you are dismissed.
DO NOT IGNORE EVACUATION ALARMS.
When conducting work on machines or equipment utilizing hazardous energy sources, proper lockout/tag out procedures must be pre-approved by BVL EH&S and Compliance, and employed prior to beginning work. Contractors must follow their own LOTO program and supply lockout/tagout equipment.
Work that may generate burning or chemical-like odors or dust emissions must be pre-approved by BVL Operations or EHS and Compliance. Work areas are often evacuated when unknown odors occur.
Contractors are expected to supply their own tools and equipment. Use of Bonneville tools, supplies, materials or equipment may be pre-authorized by the BVL site Operations Lead.

Avoid touching hazardous chemicals and items marked with the biohazard symbol. Entry into labs must be authorized in advance.
Don’t bring, store or dispose of chemicals (including paints, cleaners, etc.) on-site without first contacting BVL Operations. A Safety Data Sheet (SDS) must be provided for all chemicals brought on-site. These chemicals must be properly contained, labeled and disposed of in accordance with local, state and federal regulations.
SDSs are available for chemicals used in areas where you may be working. Copies can be obtained from the BVL Operations or other BVL Reps.
The contractor is required to communicate to BVL site Operations Lead all incidents as soon as they occur including work-related injury or illness, property damage, environmental issues, hazardous materials issues, near-miss accidents with the potential to result in serious injury/illness/property damage.
Contractors and their employees must sign in at the main entrance at the start of each working day and sign out at the end of the day.
Smoking is permitted only in designated smoking areas outside the building.
Contact the BVL site Operations Lead prior to accessing the room for instruction of safe protocols.
Each contractor is responsible for maintaining a high level of housekeeping in his/her work area, paying special attention to the following:
The contractors work area must be kept in a safe and orderly condition and cleaned up at the end of every workday.
Materials must be stacked or piled no higher than 4 feet in height and secured to prevent falling over in the event of an earthquake. Materials must not block any egress pathways, exits, aisles, electric panels, switches, panels, or alarm boxes.
Oily waste and refuse must be disposed of in appropriate waste receptacles to prevent combustion.
DO NOT pour paints or chemicals down any sewer drain or storm drain. For assistance on the proper disposal of waste, contact BVL EH&S.
Contractors are responsible for ensuring appropriate PPE is available and utilized by their employees and visitors.
The minimum required PPE in all lab areas include:
Eye Protection (ANSI z87.1 safety glasses)
Closed-toe/heel shoes
Covered lower extremities
Lab coat & gloves if performing lab work
Visitors' lab coats can only be worn in lab areas. They are not permitted anywhere else onsite.
Shutting off or turning on the Fire Protection System, water supply, or electrical service requires advance pre-authorization from the BVL Site Operations Lead.
Use of manlift equipment must be pre-authorized by BVL Operations or EHS and Compliance. All Cal/OSHA requirements must be followed.
In the event of a spill:
Alert or call the BVL site Operations Lead to report a large chemical spill/release exceeding 1 liter.
Alert nearby employees and evacuate the immediate area for a large spill
Do not try to clean up chemicals for which you have not been trained, or if the spill is greater than one liter.
Use emergency showers or eye wash stations for major chemical exposures to body or eyes for 15 minutes.
Inform area employees of minor spills you discover and suspect as being hazardous.
In the event of a gas monitoring (e.g., O2 deficiency) alarm, leave the affected area and notify the BVL site Operations Lead.
