Announcing Mr Bear SA 2013 !

Post date: Mar 25, 2013 11:35:18 PM

Brilliantly hosted by Helga Handful, with as much wit and grace as you could hope for and an OTT german accent pulled right out

of an episode of Hogans Heroes. Mr Bear SA opened with a bang as Helga gave us a hilarious rendition of a song she wrote

about bears originally as a part of Bearstock 2012. I'm glad she got an opportunity to give it more air time as it was

brilliantly written and performed. A first for me and many others.

The other entertainers were equally praise worthy, Danny Otero performed his bearversion of sweet dreams (la bouche) with

unprecedented beary-flair and Eric Kuhlmann belted out an original composition part english and part french which was

just captivating.

If you've never attended a Mr Bear event before you might appreciate someone to set the scene for you! Mr Bear isn't

about Air Brushed Models, it isn't about a high culture and tuxedos. At its core Mr Bear celebrates real people

being themselves on stage and having a laugh at the same time. Its about normal everyday people, getting up and

having a go at an amateur performance in front of a crowd. Its about giving an individual within our community a forum for

sharing an issue that they feel strongly about. And it's about meeting new people and old friends.

Mr Bear is a tradition within the bear community across Australia and the World, its what you make of it, and in my opinion

2013 we made it into a really fun night.

The contestants performed really well in the first stage. The interview stage answered questions about each of our fellas, interview

style with Helga at the helm, and gave us a little insight into what makes them tick and what they believe in. Second stage

is the talent stage where our boys dance, strip or show off some bizarre secret skill, the boys rocked it, rolled it and kneaded

it back into shape again. The third stage is about fantasy and the performances were varied, inspired and just out there !

At the end of day our Judges considered each of the performances and decided the overall winner to be the irrepressible

Mr Phillip Van Mourick. Congratulations to Phill, and all of the contestants for their contribution and having the balls to bear

all on stage for the entertainment and delight of the crowd !

I need to thank all of the BMOFA committee members and volunteers who put in a lot of work and effort to make the event happen.

It was executed very well and appreciated by all of us. Thank you for another opportunity to get out and about with like minded bears

and have a bit of fun. I also want to thank all of the interstate bears who came, we loved having you here and hope you had as much

fun as we did.

Mr Bear SA 2013 was sponsored by Eagle Leather of Hoddle St, Melbourne and The Directors Hotel of Gouger St, Adelaide.

Our amazing sponsors made this event possible and enables us to send Phil to attend Southern Hibernation in June to compete

in the National Mr Bear Competition. Next time you see Phil congratulate him on becoming Mr Bear SA and wish him well

in representing his state in the national Mr Bear Comp. I know he'll appreciate the support !
