Freshman Year/Spanish II- Investigate the World: What is the evidence that a student can initiate investigations of the world by framing questions, analyzing and synthesizing relevant evidence, and drawing reasonable conclusions about global issues?
During my freshman year, we were tasked with creating a spanish-language menu for a fictional restaurant. This project was designed to help us to understand the nuance and culture of food originating from Latin America. We began a research process which looked into what foods are popular in restaurants, then we looked at appropriate pricing and demand and finally we gave a group presentation in front of the class. This presentation included a role-play scenario where a waiter took orders and delivered fictional food to the guests. This activity was designed to encourage full Spanish immersion.
This aligns well with the ISSN objective of investigating the world because it was aimed at encouraging students to look deeper into the countries that they are familiar with. We looked at Local Economic statistics to understand how and why certain foods will be served and their pricing schemes. we focused on Mexican cultural food at a local level, however we extrapolated this out to a Global Perspective by observing other people's presentations and taking notes on the cultures and foods served in other countries. We then analyzed all of the countries and created a small infographic comparing and contrasting the countries and their respective cultures and foods. This activity was a fun way to immerse yourself fully in culture and the Spanish language.
