Sophomore Year/Extra Curricular - Take Action: What is the evidence that a student can translate his/her ideas, concerns, and findings into appropriate and responsible individual or collaborative actions to improve conditions?
During my sophomore year, I was asked by JAGS Head Leadership to assist them in the curation and creation of the JAGS Haunted Hayride scene. This was a great opportunity to give the community exposure to the JAGS programs and support the parks department. I worked with Gia Globokar and Jailei Maas to curate three unique and “worldly” costumes for our volunteers. The scene featured skeletons inspired by the Day of the Dead in Latin America, the Modern Mummies of America and the Hungry Ghost of Hong Kong. We organized over sixty volunteers into creating some festive frights.
All in all I helped to create, fundraise, facilitate and most importantly paint faces for the event. While managing sixty volunteers and providing them with a dinner, it could be hard to wrangle and ensure cooperation between all parties involved. This event helped me to grow my leadership skills immensely because it truly was the largest team I had ever led and allowed me to learn how to prioritize what is important and how to properly manage an event.
Overall, thanks to the hours of preparation and the great team I had around me. Our scene received compliments from the parks department and I was able to provide over 360 hours of service to JAGS students and other volunteers. This also raises community awareness of the JAGS program and allowed me to help launch more interest in the other JAGS projects.
