Evicted: Book Critic
2nd Semester 2020
Mr. Matthew Gillete
Junior Year/English - Investigate the World: What is the evidence that a student can initiate investigations of the world by framing questions, analyzing and synthesizing relevant evidence, and drawing reasonable conclusions about global issues?
A core focus of the JAGS program is expressing ideas and exploring cultural issues. One of the most pressing issues domestically is the housing crisis. Additionally, the compounding COVID-19 crisis has made this issue worse.
Students were tasked with creating a comprehensive book critic on a recent non fiction text of their choice. Then they would engage in a 5-7 minute oral presentation critiquing and analyzing the text, with an audio/video visual aid. Aligned with ISSN goals through the utilization of verbal language in the oral presentation and communicating nonverbally through the visual aid.
The project intended for us to explore a real world topic that we could empathize with. Additionally, we looked at the current crisis that needs to be addressed, for example the eviction epidemic. With the ongoing COVID-19 crisis and related evictions and eviction moratoriums, this book proved even more important than originally anticipated. Through my presentation I was able to look into the way other people live, the often predatory system that they are forced to deal with every month, and how we as a society can resolve these issues. Ultimately, this book brought me an understanding of the rental system in the US, something, I have never had to deal with. This allowed me to see ISSN goals come to fruition while synthesizing the topic of Evictions.
