Birthday Polynomial Project
2nd Semester 2020

Junior Year/Precalculus - Communicate Ideas: Demonstrates an understanding of diverse audiences by communicating and collaborating using verbal and non-verbal behavior, language, and strategies that are appropriate to specific audiences.
Despite what you may think, global studies and math have a definite connection. In my precalculus class an example of this would be the most difficult project to date, the Birthday Polynomial. Students were tasked with creating a review of a polynomial based around their birthday, 05.09.2004. Then creating and presenting their work in an exciting format. Aligned with ISSN goals through the utilization of exploration and presentation of the project and communicating nonverbally through the physical product.
With the goal of the project set as “exploring non-traditional polynomials” it is clear that my artifact was effective because not only was I able to accurately convey ideas but also a representation of the culmination of mathematics skills over 12+ years of continuous education. I looked to create the artifact by hand, to give it not only a personal touch but also to have clear effort placed into the project. I decorated my project with “May” flowers to convey the spring theme and lighten up the boring and mundane nature of math.
This project was a labor of love and deeply personal. I worked to complete this project over many days and the physical construction was a challenge as well. I worked with a variety of construction methods and compositions to create the ultimate end product.
