Freshman Year/English 9- Communicate Ideas: What is the evidence that a student can select and apply appropriate tools and strategies to communicate and collaborate effectively, meeting the needs and expectations of diverse individuals and groups?
During my freshman year, we were tasked with reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel and then completing a creative writing prompt related to the book. The prompt I chose was a short letter to the production team of an upcoming film adaptation of the book. I looked at issues including what characters to include in the adaptation, whether it should be in black and white or color, it should include more violent events or if we should calm down the adaptation, or if it should be entitled the same as the book. These fictitious letters to a fictitious production team, helped me to not only understand but also to synthesize my ideas about the book and helped me to apply the ideas I learned in the book and consider their effects in the real world.
This aligns well with the ISSN objective of communicating ideas. It help me to not only understand the content of the book, but it also helped me to understand how to more casually write a correspondence like this assignment required. This assignment also focused on strengthening creative writing skills based around a text. If you were able to more effectively create persuasive language based around source material you are able to more effectively communicate ideas on behalf of others , a central figure in becoming a globally competent student.
