Sophomore Year/JAGS Chemistry - Investigate the World: What is the evidence that a student can initiate investigations of the world by framing questions, analyzing and synthesizing relevant evidence, and drawing reasonable conclusions about global issues?
During my sophomore year we were originally tasked with creating a documentary project around an issue that we wanted to explain to our peers. We chose to look at the issue of sustainability within the fast fashion industry. Oftentimes within the fashion industry trends are made to come and go quickly and we looked to see how they are produced and the harmful impact that resonates within our environment for years. This documentary project was unfortunately cancelled due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. However, we were able to conduct a variety of interviews with three amazing leaders in the fashion and sustainability fields. Although these interviews were never featured in a full-length project, the insight I learned helps to influence the decisions I make within my wardrobe everyday.
This pairs well with the ISSN goal of Investigating the World because it was a deep dive into a researchable question which focused on finding an answer to the issue of sustainability which seemingly opposed the ideas of the fashion industry. My favorite interview of the three, was with Dr. Mark Liu, he was an insightful point person who helped guide our research into the fast fashion industry. Dr. Liu also hoped to make topics like this more accessible, he even created a children's book featuring Australian sun bears to explain the concept of fast fashion to younger kids. I highly encourage you to watch the interview to gain valuable insight around how we can help fight climate change through our wardrobes.
