Sophomore Year/JAGS Accelerated English 10 - Take Action: What is the evidence that a student can translate his/her ideas, concerns, and findings into appropriate and responsible individual or collaborative actions to improve conditions?
The early impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic affected our community greatly. The JAGS sophomore class decided that it was important to take meaningful action. The way I took action was by creating a variety of thank you gifts for delivery drivers, thank you notes to my mailman and grocery store employees, and creating a sign for elderly members of my neighborhood to ensure that they could get their packages delivered without having to interact with people due to the Covid-19 risk.
Then I compiled a short video for my personal Instagram to share how I took action and how others can do the same. The intention of this video was to encourage people to get out and do good for their Community during a time of need. I showcased some of my classmates and their projects to make masks for medical workers, when there was a critical shortage of masks in the beginning of the pandemic.
This aligns with the ISSN “Take Action” goal by first identifying an issue in my community and then making a solution to attempt it and then encouraging collaboration to create a wider impact. My IGTV video reached over 560 people on my Instagram. It was reposted by popular School accounts like the official JAGS Instagram. Ultimately, this taught me about the use of harvesting social media for good. I had never been able to quite use social media to encourage positive change the way I did while participating in the Thank You project.
