Event Branding
Collaborate with the Vogue Australia team to craft a dynamic theme and branding identity for the 2023 'Vogue Codes' event, an annual celebration of women in STEM. The project encompassed the design of engaging social media content, innovative merchandise, and compelling advertising mock-ups.
While working with the Vogue Australia team for this assessment, I was challenged to design for an audience and set of experiences far removed from my own. This project required a level of separation between designer and audience that I hadn’t previously been expected to navigate, prompting a more research-led and self-aware approach to my work.
After much of my initial designs received feed back such as 'overly masculine' and 'not femine enough' feed I undertook research into feminist design principles, gendered visual language, and differing perspectives on women’s representation in media and design. A key part of this process was acknowledging the limitations of my own perspective and the ways we approach designing for communities we are not personally part of.
Dr. Kathy Peiss
While traditional feminine design cues, such as pinks, purples, and the use of negative space, can be visually effective, I aimed to move beyond these defaults to better reflect the diversity of women’s experiences, particularly among younger generations who often embrace fluid and non-conforming expressions of identity. To support this, I incorporated more gender-neutral elements, including bold, simplified typography and restrained, monochromatic patterning, to create designs that felt inclusive without losing clarity or impact.
My approach was shaped by research and reference, particularly Jane Hall’s Woman Made: Great Women Designers and Dr. Kathy Peiss’s lecture series, The Past, Present, and Future of U.S. Women’s History. This project ultimately reshaped how I think about audience, authorship, and responsibility in design lessons that continue to inform how I approach work today.
As part of the project, we conducted preliminary studies and surveys to determine the target audience and their design preferences. This research guided our approach, helping us understand what our audience sought in the branding and identity for Vogue Codes 2023.
We presented our initial designs to Vogue Australia representatives, receiving valuable feedback that highlighted a shift needed from dark, masculine aesthetics to a more modern, light, and gender-neutral approach. In response, I adjusted the designs to incorporate lighter colours and increased negative space, which significantly enhanced the final outcomes. This iterative process of feedback and refinement was crucial in achieving a design that resonated with the diverse audience and aligned with the event's vision.
