Postcard Invitation

As an introduction to their new exhibition, the client Faux Gallery wants two invitation designs created in a postcard format, with each invitation featuring one of the fundamental elements of visual design; line, colour, shape, texture, space, form and value. Invitation designs should inspired by a single artist and be made using household materials and/ or hand-crafted techniques.

ALPHONSE MUCHA LINE

I was inspired by the delicate line work of Alphonse Mucha, particularly his work on the design motif of Le Chat Noir within the Art Nouveau movement. Mucha’s intricate craftsmanship, with its graceful curves and ornamental details, was used to create a sense of elegance and inviting nature for the design.

JACK KIRBY COLOUR

For the colour element, I drew inspiration from Jack Kirby’s vibrant and dynamic use of colour in his comic book art, especially in his more surreal collage work from series like Fantastic Four and New Gods. Kirby’s ability to create otherworldly, trippy celestial scenes through bold and contrasting colours guided my approach to developing an invitation that captures attention and evokes a sense of cosmic wonder.

The design process for both invitations involved a collage technique and then slight editing of the photographs.

DESIGN #1 ALPHONSE MUCHA

For the invitation inspired by Alphonse Mucha, I employed a collage method using found objects to evoke his Art Nouveau style. I carefully selected elements that mirrored Mucha’s ornamental and fluid lines and then arranged these objects to recreate the intricate design. By incorporating various textures and materials, I was able to capture the elegance and intricate detail of Mucha’s while still making it look warm, novel and inviting.

DESIGN #2 JACK KIRBY

The invitation inspired by Jack Kirby required a more complex collage process, involving multiple steps to achieve the vibrant, cosmic effect of his color work. This process began with gathering and selecting various magazines and newspapers. I then meticulously cut, painted, and stained these materials to create a range of colors and textures. The final step involved photocopying and layering these elements to construct a dynamic, otherworldly scene reminiscent of Kirby’s trippy celestial imagery.
