Gender Fluid
Gender Fluid
As a non-binary graphic designer with a near-constant craving for energy drinks, I was drawn to the mere concept of an energy drink called Gender Fluid. Created in celebration of Pride Month, the project became a space to experiment with form, colour through packaging design.
I started by researching major energy drink brands and other canned beverages to better understand current visual trends and how they communicate energy, attitude, and audience. From this research, I noticed a shift toward darker, more modern aesthetics, particularly in brands aimed at video gamers rather than athletes. I combined this direction with the vibrant colours of the gender-fluid flag to develop a series of initial sketches.
From there, I refined shapes, textures, and colour relationships, translating the concepts into digital designs in Photoshop. The final outcomes balance contemporary energy drink aesthetics with celebratory Pride-inspired colour palettes, resulting in designs that feel bold, expressive, and intentional.
While the project remains conceptual, I considered potential production techniques, such as raised UV printing, to enhance the grainy textures and add tactile depth to the cans. This study allowed me to explore packaging design beyond flat layouts, deepen my understanding of designing for curved surfaces.
