Career Panels
Career panels are an in-school opportunity for Freshmen Bearcats to interact with professionals in a wide variety of career areas and learn more about what it takes to be successful in a specific industry and in the broader workforce. Panels usually consist of 4-5 professionals who hold different jobs within the same career pathway. During the panels you will be able to ask the panelists questions to help you better understand their careers. There will be one panel for each of the 8 Career Pathways to help you determine which pathway you would like to choose at the end of your Freshman year

HEALTH CARE AND NURSING PANELS - DATE TBD
Health Care and Nursing Career Panel
1st Hour
Health Care Rotation 1
Kelsey Harris -Grace Health - Certified Physician Assistant
A Physician Assistant (PA) is a medical provider similar to a doctor, it takes less schooling and typically PAs need to work along side a physician. PAs can work in any medical specialty (ie. surgery, family medicine, ENT, orthopedics, cardiology, etc.). They may or may not have less freedom to do certain procedures or prescribe certain medications depending on where they are working.
I currently work inside the BCCHS Student Health Center providing primary care services to kids/adolescents ages 5-21, with my consulting physician (Doctor) at Grace Health in the pediatric (kids) department. I can do sutures (stitches), wart removals, skin biopsies, regular check ups, prescribe medication, ill visits (ie. sore throat, headaches, colds), and order different labs/tests.
Amy Morris - Bronson Methodist Hospital Laboratory - Medical Laboratory Scientist
A Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) works in a Hospital Laboratory where tests are performed on patient samples such as blood and body fluids. The tests are done to give Doctors the information they need to diagnose sickness and to help find the right medicines to help patients get better. Over 70% of what doctors need to help patients get better comes for Lab tests. An MLS has a 4-year degree in science with an emphasis on human physiology, biology and chemistry. It’s a great healthcare career for those who don’t want direct patient contact but want to help patients.

Working with children every day is the best job in the world! As an educator, I had the privilege of watching young people learn and grow through their knowledge of subject material and personal relationships. There are many challenges to working in the classroom, such as individualized instruction, data entry, parent contacts, and paperwork, but the rewards outweigh the challenges. Every day, and sometimes, every hour is a new adventure. This job is NEVER boring. I have always loved reading and writing, and I got to share this love with students through whole class instruction, small groups, and individual conversations. Helping students understand critical thinking and problem solving is the basis of education and these skills will continue to be valuable as we move into the future. You are not going to get rich as an educator, but the work is meaningful and rewarding. I miss being in the classroom, and I hope to get back to the business of education as soon as I can!
