Differentiation is providing alternative paths for students who achieve the same end goal. Differentiation does not change what students need to learn, it customizes the instruction and practice, to some degree, to help compensate individual student deficiencies and strengths. All students are evaluated on their achievement of the standards across the four domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Their evaluation is based on their ability to produce and understand language without assistance, so differentiation does not allow for personal or mechanical tools to be used to "help the student" such as translators, nor does it reduce or modify the standards that students must achieve.

Qualification depends on the student's performance in class. Unfortunately, maintaining these differentiation groups is not always possible due to class size or other concerns. The final decision is up to the teacher, and interested students should talk to me at the end of the period.

- Native Speakers: As a department, we offer native speakers the opportunity to test into appropriate levels. This needs to be done during the first week of the semester. Options may be a different level, or AP Language, AP Literature, or IB Standard Level. Please note that "honors" is not an alternative for native speakers. Honors is an academic designation. After determining the correct level, such as level 3, a native speaker then has the choice of level 3 regular or level 3 honors.
- Heritage Speakers: Like native speakers, hertiage speakers may also test into a higher level class. More commonly, we can accomodate heritage speakers via alternative practice assignments that target their strengths and weeknesses. For example, instead of a targeted grammar practice, heritage speakers may write paragraphs that cover the same content.
- Students with an A in the class. Students who are able to meet the standards in the class and get an A are elligible for the Círculo de honor. This special program is awarded at the end of each quarter and applies for the following quarter. Students with this differentiation are excused from certain study/practice requirements of the class. The idea is that if a student is able to demonstrate A-level proficiency on assessments and the class, then they may not need to practice as much as other students.
- Students with below grade-level academic performance or poor study skills. Ideally, these students would complete additional practice work, however, often students who perform at this level are resistant to additional work, and therefore, extra support is offered, but not required, for these students. The school has several options for free tutoring available and the curriculum offers a substantial amount of optional remediation practice and instruction.
