"MOMMY, MOMMY, READ ME A MATH PROBLEM..."
The many benefits of reading to/with young children have been widely publicized. In efforts to promote reading literacy, many families have made bedtime stories just as much a part of the bedtime routine as brushing teeth and a good night kiss.
Ever wonder why families don’t have a bedtime math routine? Yeah, you probably weren’t wondering that at all. A recent study published in Science found that replacing a bedtime story with a math discussion even one night a week results in marked improvements in a student’s math skills. Believe it or not, there’s even a Bedtime Math app that you can use for just that purpose. The app is basically a cross between a bedtime story and a math conversation starter. I use it with my own kids and they love it!
