HAVE YOU HAD “THE TALK” WITH YOUR TEEN YET?
Dear parents,
Talking about “it” with your teen can definitely be difficult, especially for parents for whom “it” is not a regular topic in your household. “It” is a topic that may make your adolescent uncomfortable and, more importantly, may make you extremely uncomfortable (downright squeamish).
But, just because it’s a difficult conversation to have doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have it. In fact, the more you talk about it and embrace it, the more natural and free the dialogue will be. You and your teenager will become closer to each other and even get to the point where you enjoying discussing the topic and how it relates to your daily life.
The topic to which I am referring is obviously math, a topic that many parents avoid talking with their kids about at all cost (except when it comes to their kid’s grades). However, math is all around us and its relevance in our lives knows no bounds. When we casually and regularly talk to kids about the math we see in our everyday lives, it becomes natural to for all of us to notice, understand, wonder about, and embrace the math that is all around us.
So it’s time to start having that talk with your child! They’ll thank you for it!
Here’s a website written by a math teacher devoted to this very topic:
