Welcome to 8th Grade Math at Albany Middle School!
Welcome to Albany Middle School! We are so glad that you are here with us. If you ever have any questions or there’s absolutely anything that we can help you with, please, please let us know. We want to help make your experience at Albany Middle School as awesome as humanly possible!
We am so excited about the journey of exploration and learning that we will be embarking on together. Hopefully, our class will be a place where you can stretch yourself, think outside the box, do more than you ever thought you could, be challenged, persevere through frustration, and discover your own great potential as a learner. In this class, we value taking intellectual risks and we value mistakes. We consider both to be essential to the growth process. So get ready to fearlessly put yourself out there as an 8th grade mathematician!
There are a few tasks that you need to accomplish tonight to get you ready for this class. Here they are:
TASK #1
The lifeline to this class is our 8th Grade Math Headquarters. Bookmark it! Better yet, make it your homepage! Every time you do practice at home, you are expected to check your work via the answer keys that are on this website. You will definitely be using this site regularly, most likely on a nightly basis.
Beyond the answer keys, there are many other great resources on the website that both students and parents find very useful. We are most proud of our 8th grade math blog titled Math, Learning, and Love. Check it out to get a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of this math class. Your life may never be the same again!
TASK #2
Our textbook publisher, College Preparatory Mathematics, has an E-book. Not only will you find the problems for your nightly practice on the E-book, there are also incredibly useful resources on the site such as problem hints, graphing tools, online manipulatives, challenge problems, and much more. In order to access the E-book, there is a simple registration process for you to do tonight.
To register for the CPM E-book, first make sure that you are logged onto your AUSD email account. Then, click here. Enter the following PIN: FCQKF. Then choose "Sign in with Google" so you link your school email account to the Ebook. Please use your school account so that you can log in at school. Do not log in with your Facebook account as you will not be able to use that log-in at school. If you would like more information as well as step-by-step directions on how to register, go here.
After registering, you will henceforth access the CPM online text @ https://ebooks.cpm.org. Be sure to bookmark this site!
TASK #3
In this class, there are actions/traits that we highly value, such as being prepared for class, taking intellectual risks, leadership, good citizenship, wildly active participation, helping classmates, asking questions, sharing new ideas, etc. We use Class Dojo as a platform to recognize these positive behaviors (there may also be fabulous prizes involved as well!).
To get connected to our Class Dojo, please do the following:
Go to http://classdojo.com
Proceed with the sign-up process by selecting a username and password.
When prompted, enter the personalized class code that was supplied to you today in class on the Class Dojo registration instruction sheet.
You will also be asked to enter your parent’s email address. To ensure proper registration, you must enter your parent’s correct email address so please check in with your parent as you type this.
After you finish the registration process, please give the Class Dojo instructions to your parent(s) and instruct them to register for Class Dojo. I will be regularly sending out class information via Class Dojo, so it is very important for parents to sign up as well.
After you register, have fun customizing your avatar. This is the avatar that will appear on screen in class everyday (you may change the avatar as often as you would like!). You can also download the app in order to customize your avatar or check your progress.
TASK #4
For this and also for other classes, you will need access to your Albany Unified email account. Please set up this account tonight. After you set up your account, you should find an email invitation from me to join to our class’ Google Classroom. Accept that invitation and we'll be off and running! Note: If you don't see a Google Classroom invitation, please see me about it.
Here are the steps to register for a student email / login for Albany Unified School District:
Go to http://mail.ausdk12.org
Your username is comprised of the following:
first name - middle initial - last initial - last two digits of your high school graduation year
(For example, if Barack Hussein Obama graduates in 2023, his AUSD email would be barackho23@ausdk12.org)
3) Your password is initially set to your permanent ID number (can be found in Aeries).
Congratulations, you are officially cleared for takeoff!
Now the real fun begins!
