Fountain Valley High School football players might not be thinking about their adult lives, but Coach Ray Fenton is picking up the slack.
“We’re looking to build relationships that last forever,” Fenton said. “The things we do on the football field, which I certainly respect, are not what are most important to us. What’s important is what kind of kids they are at 25 years old, and what kind of fathers and husbands they’ll be. We’re looking to develop good men.”
In the wake of head coach John Shipp’s resignation, Fenton, the former Orange County Register Coach of the Year and state coach of the year in 2007, is the new head man of the FVHS football program, as announced by assistant principal Joe Fraser on Dec. 7.
Fenton led Cypress High School to the CIF Southern Section Southern Division title in 2007, and has coached at Webb of Claremont for the past two seasons after resigning from Cypress in 2010.
“The kids enjoy the school and they love to be there, so that’s a good fit with my philosophy,” said Fenton.
